Has anyone had any experience with buying a camera from Germany or Hong Kong, is import duty/taxes payable and how much is it likely to be.

Buying from anywhere in the EU you'll be paying VAT in the country of puchase, so there's nothing extra to pay when buying from Germany.

Goods bought from Hong Kong will be eligible for both duty and VAT. Cameras are zero-rated for duty. Vat is 17.5% and is paid on the cost of the camera
plus shipping.

Buying lenses abroad can be quite expensive as they are subject to 6.7% duty. The you've got VAT on top of that.

Hi hollis

Thank's for your reply.

Looks like I'll be buying from Germany, nearly £200 cheaper than UK??

Maybe worthwhile contacting kerso aka Ian Kerr. He operates on eBay but imports new stuff from the US to somewhere in Scotland. This means that you will not have to pay any VAT or Import Duty.
I believe he has been on this Forum and most certainly has been on POTN. Yet to hear any complaints about the gear or the service.
