We saw a bird in our backyard that we've never seen before. And both of my kids are super bird lovers so they know the names of most of the birds we see around here!

Any ideas?

thank you! the kids will be so excited when they get home. we've never seen that bird before. and he's much chubbier than the photo...we almost thought he was a baby he was so round.

is it strange to find one here in southeast new york? we're right by new york city.

Welcome to Birdforum, Rosiegirl. As Robin says, it's an American Woodcock. It's probably been driven out of its normal woodland habitat by the grim weather you've been having.

An American Woodcock, great yard bird! We have lived at our present location in Saint Joseph, Missouri for over 40 years and ONE DAY we did have one of these birds in our yard. Only happened one time!
Your kids might find it interesting that some people call this bird a Timberdoodle!

See here.

thank you so much, everyone!

my kids are so excited that we know what bird it is now. we got to watch him stick his beak in the ground looking for food for about 45 minutes.
