Paul, both were seen yesterday in the vicinity of Crockford Bridge by a friend returning from the ST Eagle but only one teneral I. pumilio. I'm not sure where he parked! My new favourite site for pumilio is Ober Water after your advice last year and better than my experience at Latchmore, although I did see them there two years ago (single male)

cheers, alan

Good to know they were at Crockford. Never seen pumilio there but that's probably due to carelessness. According to the new atlas week 26 is the peak for both Southern and Scarce Blue-tailed.

Nice to know - I'll be down that way at exactly that time and will be targeting these species, particularly Scarce Blue-tailed. Could someone provide any extra info on SBT at Ober water? I'm a little reluctant to try Latchmore again as I remember it being a long walk and my girlfriend has some mobility problems.

Regards

Clive

Scarce Chaser male and female, several Hairy Dragonflies and dozens - hundreds - of Banded Demoiselles at Billingshurst New Bridge yesterday afternoon.

Also some fairly co-operative Downy Emeralds frequently hovering while patrolling at Thursley Moat.

I look in the shallow ditches around SU255039. I think most people park near Markway Bridge on the A35 (c. SU250038) and go over a stile to walk east along the Ober. (I walk from Puttles Bridge to make a day of it).

I usually look first at the Silver Stream which has Southerns and Small Reds as a fallback if the SBTs don't show. It's a very short walk from Puttle's Bridge.

There were some on Cadnam Common last year throughout June and July. That's a short walk from Furzley Road - I'll post if any appear there again although I am away in Spain so may not know until July.

Southern at the Silver Stream yesterday

I found a male Lesser Emperor Dragonfly this morning at a private site in East Kent. I saw it well twice, the first time it was attacking a female Emperor Dragonfly as she was egg laying. I did try for a shot but ended up with some blurry shots. Despite being on site a further hour I did not see it again. Also seen were 5 Red veined Darter which did allow a few pleasing photo opportunities. More on my Blog: www.marcheath.blogspot.com

I was in the area a couple of days ago but couldn't see an easy way of walking along the Ober from Puttles Bridge. Any directions would be gratefully received.
Thanks.

Does anyone know the specifics of where the Norfolk Lesser Emperors and Red-Veined Darters were being seen today? Tempted to go across tomorrow/Sunday. Might see a warbler whilst I'm there as well, make a day of it.

Saw the Febrigg one today, not easy to see but site easy to get to

Some more (very) early sightings from the BDS site:
2/6 Southern Hawker, Derbyshire
5/6 Common Darter, Isle of Wight
7/6 Ruddy Darter, Essex
8/6 Lesser Emperor, Kent
12/6 Small Red-eyed Damselfly, Suffolk
12/6 Scarce Emerald Damselfly, Essex

I finally got to Whixall Moss for the white-faced darters yesterday. They kindly put on a show, including a couple of mating pairs, although the four-spotted chasers were making life very difficult for them.

That visit completed my list of species that appear on the official UK list and which breed in England (a highly artificial list, admittedly, as it allows me to cheat by not counting lesser emperor or southern emerald damsel, neither of which I've seen). I see the lesser emperors in Norfolk were observed ovipositing on Friday, so here's hoping for another species to establish itself...
