Baillons crake call question - France (1 Viewer)

A 'local' had a funny call yesterday at a local lake so called in the troups. I went this morning but whilst didn't see anything heard a call.

Its fair to say it did sound like a Baillons Crake from Xeno-Canto comparisons.

But what I don't know is are there any frogs that make a similar sound to Baillons?

Hi Rosbifs,

Yes, the Edible Frog has a very similar sounding call to Baillon's Crake, I have limited experience of the latter (one bird calling and watched at Stodmarsh years ago), but greater experience of the frog's noise, which I'd say is louder than the crake's call. I wonder whether Baillon's would still be calling at this time of year too, I'm leaning towards a froggy solution to this one ;)

I'll pass on the comments - the 'locals' seemed to be confident it wasn't a frog as I kept saying 'are we sure it isn't a frog!' I have listened on youtube - so will sent them the link. The bird can only have been 8 metres away and the call was more 'precise'.

Lets hope someone sees it....
