Birds reduced in number (1 Viewer)

Hello! I am writing from Illinois in the USA. I know that the first few weeks of May are great for seeing migrating birds, and trust me, I had some excellent species visiting. But over the past week, as species like the oriole left, many of the goldfinches and house finches seem to have gone, too. In general, there is much less activity. Is this normal? It's kind of a letdown!!

Kilian,
welcome to Birdforum!

Please realize that there always are differences between bird occurrence in one year and another. One of the reasons is weather: I remember, for example, sitting in a migration hotspot in perfect weather with zero activity. Once we got the weather reports from areas south of us, it was clear that a major rainfront had stopped the migration south of us, and one had to wait maybe a week before the weather again allowed birds to move through.
