Sparrowhawk at the North Moors

I walked around the North Moors late morning. At the far corner there was a commotion in the trees behind me. A Sparrowhawk flew out with a largish bird firmly in his grasp. It was too close and too quick for me to get a shot of it in flight. It flew over toward the fence on the east side and went to ground. Scot fortunately saw where it had flown; between us we managed to see it through the undergrowth.

Ive attached some pictures of the bird. It managed to find the darkest spot to land and the pictures are taken through a tiny window in the undergrowth.

I had only seen a sparrowhawk in the air or a fleeting glimpse until yesterday. It was a real privilege to stand and watch one eating its prey for about 20 minutes and from only about 10-15 meters away. And great pics to record the moment!

I've included a few pics from the beginning of last week. Only just now had time to download them from the camera.
The Little Grebe with its little one are my faves, how small is he/she….

The 3 youngest brood of avocet 2:4:1 are all doing well, but are venturing a bit more in search of shallow wet areas as the water appears to be dropping each day.

Moors in mid afternoon added to Des's records Mistle Thrush 3, LBB Gulls 8 including 1 juv, Kestrel 2 & Coot 90.

Flashes in the evening added LRP 5, 4ad 1juv: Curlew 15: Lapwing 68: Teal 3, Raven, Lesser Whitethroat & Kingfisher.

Swift passage observed N > SE involving about 200+ birds, with 32 birds passing through the Moors mid afternoon and larger numbers moving behind the flashes early evening with 129 birds in the air at one time. There was no rain but the threat of rain appeared to bring the swifts down.

New BIRDGUIDES from today, personally a bit of a let down from old format. Thank goodness for Birdforum.

Can`t find any County reports.
