Hello friends,

Among other birds which I have already ID, I spotted these 2 birds in Petra this morning.

As always, any feedback is very much appreciated!

Jose

Thank you Mike and Sherpa!

Somehow it doesn't look like a Steppe Buzzard to me |>|

But then again my knowledge of birds is still rather limited.

Cheers,

Jose

LLB and especially cirtensis is a mess, both on systematics and on distribution, few breeding records in Lybia, nothing really known about cirtensis in Egypt but Arabian peninsula possibly cirtensis.
It does not look Buteo r. rufinus to me (nothing eagle like here) but if cirtensis present in Jordan, than impossible to tell from B.b.vulpinus on this picture

Cirtensis crossed my mind. I think Collins mapped them as far as Sinai? 🤷‍♂️
I'd be surprised if there's a vulpinus in Petra at this time of year. 🤔🤷‍♂️

Well, it looked like a LLB colourwise (reddish tail with pale base, pale head etc) but structurally was more compact - that's about what I think cirtensis should look like. I excluded vulpinus on its apparent territorial behaviour plus season. Nominate LLB should not be breeding there, neither should nominate Common Buzzard do so.
