It's all very well quoting the UK usage of plastic, it's the less developed World that needs to address this issue more firmly IMHO. I've witnessed Indonesian boat crews, simply dump garbage in to the ocean fron the bins on deck and the beach in places in Bali, is disgusting.
In Kuta, Bali, when standing in the water, it's not uncommon to have plastic bags and other garbage just wrap around your legs. They have a beach clean ip ever day involving the use of a JCB digget whcih collect the piles of rubbish that wash ashore but this will be a fraction of what remains at sea.
