Birding settings for SX50 (1 Viewer)

Hi there! I just took the plunge on a camera intended mostly for birding. I jumped when I saw a refurbished SX50HS direct from Canon USA with 1-year warranty, for $230. Thanks to those who have posted comments and shots on this forum, which helped me narrow down my choices.

The refurb only has a 14 day return period so I'll want to try it out pretty extensively when it gets here. What are good baseline settings for birding with the camera, for example metering pattern, focus modes, ISOs, and etc?

Any suggestions would be appreciated, to help me give this camera a good trial in the one or two sessions I'm likely to be able to fit in during the return period!
