Winter Sparrowhawk (1 Viewer)

We've just recorded our first record of Eurasian Sparrowhawk (male) in winter on our local patch here in St Petersburg, Russia, Goshawks winter but Spars usually migrate. We also have a large number of Thrushes overwintering this year, I wonder if that's a factor?

Any of you Finnish guys tell me how often you see winter Sparrowhawks there?

Thanks, A

Most of the Sparrowhawks in Finland migrate away and return with Chaffinches. But some leave always behind for annoyance of tits, Yellowhammers and other winter passerines. Common it is not. In Helsinki area nowadays, most often seen diurnal raptor in winter is Goshawk, followed by White-tailed Eagle and then Sparrowhawk. Depends of course somewhat where you are - if you never visit the seashore you will not see the eagles.

Thanks Jalid, that's what I thought.
