Today I went to the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. It has become a tradition of mine to make the trip at least once in January or February in order to build up my Year List. A lower elevation and milder climate means I can find birds there that I won’t see in my part of the state until March or April. Unfortunately, out of a target list of ten species, I was only able to find three. However, it was a beautiful day and I had a great time nevertheless.

84. Belted Kingfisher
85. Savannah Sparrow
86. Northern Harrier

71. Eurasian Coot

Two new birds today, so I’m now up to 88.

The kinglet is a very early record; they usually don’t show up until early in spring migration.
