Looking at this Honey Buzzard I see

pale throat bordered by dark band
very ill defined carpal patch
underwing coverts with no visible pattern
very broad wing with visible 6th finger (P5), although not very long
yellow cere as in juveniles but already yellowish eye

looks like ORIENTAL HONEY BUZZARD to me, which would probably be a mega for Lebanon, so other opinions most welcome!

Hi Tom,

Difficult to be sure with only one image (perhaps Bassel can provide a few more?) but I see a few feature that are perhaps more in line with apivorus:
-the barring on the secondaries is rather broad
-the outer primaries have (almost) no bars on the basal half
-the sixth finger seems a bit short
-the tail doesn't look very broad

The bird doesn't appear particularly bulky to me, but again, it's only one image

Regarding some of the points you raised:
-juv EHB with 6 fingers: http://www.pbase.com/johanstenlund/image/117309899
-juv EHB lacking obvious carpal patch: http://www.pbase.com/johanstenlund/image/117309889
-rather uniform underwings coverts: http://www.pbase.com/johanstenlund/image/102471813

Some images of OHB on birdingbeijing blog: http://birdingbeijing.com/2011/10/15/variation-in-oriental-honey-buzzard/
The paler iris of juv OHB is also mentionned in the blog, but what about it? Are juv OHB supposed to have a paler iris than their european counterparts?

Personnaly I would ID Bassel's bird as an European honey, but that doesn't mean it is one!

Hi Tib78
agree that P5 is not very long and the bird not straightforward. According to Birds of Prey of the Indian Subcontinent iris is turning yellow in OHB within a few month, sometimes weeks. Never seen a yellowish Iris in first cal year EHB

Yep Bassel where are the other pictures of this beautiful bird, whatever it is?

Hello Tib and Tom

Here are other two photos . Slightly out of focus , but I hope they will help.
