Sigma 2.8 120-300 versus Nikon 70-200 VR 2.8 (1 Viewer)

Anyone got any comparisons/opinions on these two lenses for a newbie?

I am currently lucky enough to have a Sigma 2.8 120-300 with which I can get very good results if I concentrate - also works OK for record shots with a Sigma 2x and better with a 1.4x converter. The only issue I have is lack of VR for shots when I'm between hides or haven't got the Sigma on a monopod or tripod i.e. BIF.

I haven't had the chance to use a Nikon 2.8 VR 70-200 and I was wondering whether it would be slightly more flexible a lens and might have better quality so that a crop from 200mm on the Nikon would not be miles out from a crop from 300mm on the Sigma? There seem to be loads of these for sale at the moment at a price range just less than I paid for the Sigma - what's everyone upgrading to?

I suppose another option is a non VR Nikon F4 300mm with a 1.4x...

A secondary issue is whether the Nikons would work with the Sigma TCs or whether I'd have to replace them with Nikon ones?

Of course I'd love to be able to afford the Nikon 400 VR but wouldn't we all...

Any opinions or anyone on the NW UK want to swap lenses for a week?!?
