The first photo shows leaf curl on an apple tree. You can see in some of the above photos little 'bugs', dwarfed by the ants. There are woolly apple aphids (Erisoma lanigerum) and are the cause of the leaf curl. The aphids secrete a waxy filament which forms into a wool and helps to protect them from predators. They are about 1.5-2mm long when fully grown. They feed on plant sap, excreting plant sugars as honeydew. Knobbly galls will also form on the tree.
