Thanks to all for the help.
I have now installed Firefox and it immediately solved the problems I had with a couple of sites.
One question.......while going through the process it asked me if I wanted to make Firefox my automatic choice and I ticked "yes"..........so
a) did I do right
b) What does it mean-as I can decide IE or Firefox at any time?

Let us say you get an email with a link to a webpage. If you click that link, it will open in your "default" or "automatic" choice, now Firefox. You can change that setting later if you want -- next time you open IE it will probably ask if you want to change back.
