SX40 Super Zoom (1 Viewer)

Managed to pick up an used SX40 recently. Was out in the field today shooting with my usual rig 7D plus 300 when I thought I'll take a few shots with the sx40 to try it out. It was already quite late so a few were at ISO 400. Anyway I was quite impressed. Will have to use it in good sunlight sometime to really see what it can do. I would say it is a very good little camera.

Took this today and I'm quite pleased with it considering the poor lighting conditions. A testament to Roy & Co. who I ragged in the early days for information regarding certain backlit situations. Thanks guys :t:

Say what you like about Powershots but whatever you do, don't leave home without one.... ;)

Nice Andy, was that with your earlier described custom settings?

It was - more or less. I used Tv mode as described earlier. 1/500sec (should have brought it down a bit), F5.8, Auto ISO (through the roof at 1250). Dialled in some much needed Exposure Comp. (+0.3) to take account of the horrible backlighting.

HTH,

Yes good thanks Andy

So now I have an SX40 and an SX50. I have the feeling I'll still use both.

This morning before the sun was up I looked out the window at the feeder and saw this fellow with breakfast. I ran and grabbed the SX40 because of its better low light capability vs the SX50.

I'm a bit blown away. Looking at the photo data, this is ISO 1600 and shutter speed is slow, 1/20 sec. It's through the window.

I have to think that the IS must also make it possible to take passable photos with a such a long exposure?

A real nice shot considering the circumstances!

A couple more examples. The Starling, from about 3m (unfortunately with Avian Pox and the Stonechat from about 20m - cropped to about as far as I could go without it all turning nasty..

Just to bump the thread a few from today. First time in a fair few weeks to have decent light.

Following on from John's nice photos in good light, I did a test at 9,000 feet in Colorado last week.
Tested the SX40 at 24 mm and full zoom of 840 mm.
I wished I had some birds to photograph but it was too cold for them at 15f when we arrived.
At 840 mm I focused on the top of the highest peak in the background.

Was in Currys today and they have the SX40HS for £185 as a clearance line.
Not sure if all branches have the offer but worth checking out if you're in the market for one.

...and a few more from over the cold & snowy weekend. No prize winners as usual but not too bad I suppose when you consider the dull, grey uninspiring shooting conditions.

I must admit, I'm still enjoying this camera and it continues to produce results that keep me amused which I suppose is what it's all about really (though I would probably be enjoying it far more if I'd only paid the recently reported £185 for it) ;)

Fantastic shots there Andy! I don't get Siskins where I live.

I have also had the camera out this weekend and today. I managed to get a couple of shots I'm happy with, particularly the Long-tailed Tit as my only previous shots of the bird were at a much greater distance.

I was also glad to get a photo of the woodpecker, I haven't been able to take a picture of it since I purchased this camera.
