I have just purchased this book in my local shop today need to keep records.
I am not sure how to fill in the life list.in the book it says fill the life list with number 11.what does the 11 stand for I understand the date for month. wasn't sure if 11 meant to mean your 11th species.

No replies here, so here is my view as one who hasn't bought The Birdwatchers' Yearbook for many years.

I never used the section that you refer to. For many years I used a compact List of the Birds of the Western Palearctic booklet first produced by the British Birds magazine in 1978, although I don't bother with a list now. Look out for that booklet or something similar. Alternatively, and others will be better able to advise than I, there will be life list programmes downloadable from the internet.

Enjoy yourself in this great hobby!

thanks Allen for reply,I'm surprised no one has commented,guess people dont use it,it's a nice boo esp for beginner like me.just don't get the beg when says put 11 in life list

Hi Warren - only just seen this. I use the Yearbook and just put a tick in the box for lifers.
I tick the yearlist and mark * if it is a life bird and make a comment in the monthly diary system.
I also use the Logbook which gives more room for details of trips and sightings.
Basically I find both useful for my own records and recollections and my Logbooks and diaries go back years.

Just personalise it for you own needs, The butterfly and D'fly lists are useful too.

Aye, the sections that I used most were those listing local recorders and bird sanctuaries when I had holidays in the UK. It is a good publication, although not one to buy each year, methinks, unless one wants to spend that money for the sake of the lists and the articles at the front!

hi grumps thanks for reply,I've been doing exactly same as you now just ticking life box making comments in diary if a life bird this year tick in different colour etc.bet it's nice to look back over the years in a book.hopefully I will get it every year now it def has good info in it Allen

I guess it means put 11 if you saw the bird in 2011 (similar to month numbers).

I did think that Dave but wasn't sure maybe as it is a 2012 just wondered why 11 not 12.I will use it that way
