Instead of the usual seagulls, I saw this exotic-looking (to me) bird sitting on top of a tree outside my house. What is it?

Grey Heron it is.
 
Thanks for that. I did a quick search and discovered the grey heron is quite a predator. There's photos of it gobbling up small mammals and birds!
 
He is an interesting character! He does usually largely eat fish while wading, so it's quite interesting to have him visiting in your yard.
