At least I'm assuming it's a wasp and not some kind of mimic.

I was at a water trough in Serrania de Ronda when this large wasp came in for a drink. When I saw the brown and yellow I thought hornet (I've seen the real deal at the same place several times), but then I saw the narrow waist.

Any ideas?

Thanks. It rang a bell so I had a look through my photo files and found I'd had an identical one in 2011. Confirmed by google search. Delta unguiculatum, great potter wasp.

Never rely on Google alone, in fact most images that come up by googling show an insect decidedly different to yours. The 12th image is the first one to agree with yours. However, only one species of Delta known from Europe and it is clearly a variable species.
