Honestly I didn't think gnatcatcher when I heard it either, but I'm not great at that yet. Howzabout a hint, Bobby? ;)

This bird has a black mask that extends out over the eyes.

Hi Audubob,

I would not have guessed Loggerhead Shrike based on the sound, but it's my guess based on your hint. I can't recall a shrike ever making such sounds. I guess I have just heard their louder calls and song. Definitely a tricky one.
