Hi Gents , I was just lucky enough to buy a used ,

Nikon fieldscope 60 ed mk2 . It has come with a 20 x fixed eyepiece.

I am very interested in buying a zoom lens for it but i am a bit confused about all the different model numbers etc .

Now the question i am asking just for spotting it wont be used for digiscoping as i have lovelly long lens for my camera .

Theres so many different zoom option with lots of different caotings .

Mc1 mc2 etc .

So on a eyepice is it worth paying all that extra dosh for the zoom with all the differnt coatings , or is just worth getting a standard zoom .

Help Please .;)

I hope im not speaking gobbliegook .

Early Fieldscope zooms had fold down rubber eyecups, the latest versions (MC 2) have twist up/down eyecups - primarily to aid spectacle wearers. MC would stand for multi coatings, and the MC2 would be the most current version though it has been on sale for quite a few years now......it is a more bulkier eyepiece than its predecessor.
Whether or not to buy a new zoom depends entirely on you and how much dosh you wish to part with. A good second hand zoom is the way I would go to compliment your kit; just carefully check to see that there are no internal specks, the outer surfaces and coatings are unscratched or not too worn by poor cleaning etc.
You probably are aware but remember that Nikon Spotting scope zooms won't fit your Fieldscope. Hope this helps.
Good luck

I am considering buying an ED50 but I'm confused by the eye pieces. There seem to be MC/DC/wide and zoom. The wide DS costs the same as the 13-30 zoom. Can anyone advise on the pros/cons of the different eyepieces.I looked at the Nikon on line brochure but it didn't help.

MC used mostly for viewing with twisted eyecup then when Nikon came out with DS, it is mainly for Digiscoping and viewing but with the supplied rubbercup.

I have used DS16x on my ED50 before I sold it together with my ED82 and now my 13-40x MC II zoom eyepiece is on it. You still can do Digiscoping with the zoom eyepiece but you will get a vignetting image on your pictures and it is also depends with your compact camera.

For viewing, 13-40x on my eyes, it is sharp up to 40x but the Field of View is a bit narrow for some of the users especially those with glasses.

Overall either of the MC / DS or zoom eyepiece, the view through ED50 is awesome :king:

I'd normally go for the zoom, however, the 13-30x zoom is the "old" zoom that isn't quite as good as the (more expensive) 13-40x. It's not really bad, at least not if you don't use it above about 25x on the ED50, but it's not quite as good as the new zoom.

I definitely prefer the 13-40x given the larger ocular and hard plastic eyecups. Those eye-cups are far less likely to break over time then the fold-down cups. I agree heavily with what Horukuru had mentioned. I too used the ED50 with the 16x DS eyepiece with the rubber eye-cup and the view is fantastic. Furthermore, I have always been of the opinion that 30x is enough magnification to achieve good views, but I recognize the need for zoom in certain situations. Good Birding!
