Anyone else care to help out this guy who's coming to Yorkshire later this year? Must admit I don't know any hotels that I could recommend.

Despite the weather my local Tree Sparrows seem to be doing OK. This youngster was happily waiting to be fed here in Burley.

The big red star over spurn yesterday tempted me out today, especially with the supporting cast, I thought I had a chance at a half decent day.

Unfortunately, the main cast didnt turn up but a nice red backed shrike plus a few year ticks made the trip worth while. (Yellow wag, spotted flycatcher, and a few waders)

Finished by driving up to Filey for the fantastic bluethroat. First for me in the UK and my first red spotted.

Strid Woods
Had a walk with my mate along from Barden Bridge down to the Strid, several Pied and one Spotted flycatcher, one Wood warbler were the notables, disappointed by a heard but not seen Redstart But on the way back we watched a swimming L Black Backed Gull take a duckling by grabbing it and dipping it underwater for a few seconds then it flew with it to the bank and ate it.........
We had watched, yesterday, on Barden Moor two of these birds "quartering the heather". We now realise, after watching the duckling, they were probably looking for Grouse/Curlew or other moorland birds' chicks.
Interesting....................
Cheers Joe

Is the suggestion on the Spurn Bird Obs website that there may have been a possible Taiga Fly there on Saturday evening?

Edit: thats me putting 2 and 2 together and reaching 1,365, 921! Wishful thinking as I need Taiga (but no Brown )

Spurn Flycatcher

Can Andy or anyone else from Spurn cast any light on the small flycatcher seen near dusk on Sunday? Intriguingly the write up for Monday on Spurn sightings page says that the chance of the fifth species of Flycatcher for the weekend was lost.
Stuart

Sorry Phil - cross posted - asking same question

Hi Stu, I found a small brownish flycatcher late Sunday night, but it kept flitting away from me without getting bins on it, I couldn't see any white in its wings or tail, when I saw it perched briefly its head was obscured but underparts had no streaking, Roy Taylor also perched views with head obscured but short tailed and short-winged, and in flight definitely had now white in tail, we both said if we were in se asia we would have just put it down as a Brown Flycatcher. it was so late we couldn't do anything with it and hoped it would be there this morning, but it wasn't!

Unusual sight of a buzzard being mobbed by crows today, not unusual in the country side but over Chants ave, in Hull that’s the first for me I have lived here for 60 odd years

Interesting. I also saw a Buzzard yesterday (mobbed by Jackdaws) over my house as I walked home from work. Not something you see in Shipley, Bradford, very often. I had two Buzzard sightings in the Shipley area (again over the burbs, not out in the sticks) in April 2011 (the only other time I've seen them over the town in 13 years here).

Don't worry, NE will license them to be shot soon enough...

Good to see buzzards being reported in urban areas, surely a pointer they are doing well

Just a heads up there's a public talk on Sheffield's peregrines taking place on 3rd June, 7-8pm, at St George's Church Lecture Theatre, Mappin St Sheffield.

See http://sheffieldperegrines.wordpress...talk-3rd-june/ for details.

For information, the RSPB officially open the St. Aidan's site tomorrow. This is the area that has historically been called Swillington Ings but is now being re-branded. There is a St. Aidan's page on the RSPB website for anyone interested.

We lost it on the Wader Scrape sometime after 5pm and I haven't heard any reports since then .. It was very 'flighty' when it was there so theres a good chance it has moved on ..
