Lens Advice (1 Viewer)

Hi. I am looking for a bit of advice. I have a Nikon D80 and use a sigma 50 500 lens which is good but heavy and no VR so I cant really use it hand held. I was thinking of getting a Nikon 70 300 VR with a 1.4 converter. I have also seen a Sigma 70 300 VR which is a lot cheaper. Should i go cheap or should I buy Nikon. Has anybody used either of these lenses, or what about a Sigma 150 500 OS? Any advice would be welcome. Thanks

The key to key to getting nice pics handheld with the Bigma is to shoot 1/800sec or faster shutter speed. Since it is also sharpest at F8 that generally means on many days you will need ISO800 or more. That said, I think upgrading your body to a D90 would be more effective since you will gain a full stop in ISO performance at the least. Maybe even wait until the end of summer for the D90 replacement for a big jump in resolution and AF performance.

The 70-300 zooms don't work with teleconverters. If you need that focal range you should buy the 150-500.

Today i was looking for a similar lay out, I already have a Nikon 70-300vr so went to my local camera shop and tried a Kenko 2 x convertor, it works very well except there is no auto focus. manual focus only, I have to point out that it was a bright day and results were excellent, if using this in less light one would have to take the ISO up to 400 +....
So am still considering options myself, as i lost out on a purchase of 120-300 f2.8 Sigma.
