What Bird would be your county bird? (1 Viewer)

Just to ruffle a few feathers, I'll propose Ring-necked parakeet for Surrey!

(Other than that, Woodlark would be a good choice as they aren't easily found throughout the UK unlike most of Surrey's other regular birds, and our heathland has a relatively stable population)

Lets have our county birds! update

OK - So this is what we have or would like - so far.

The symbol of the Berkshire Ornithological Club is a Tufted Duck, and that or a Great Crested Grebe would be a good shout for our county chock full of gravel pits.

FWIW, the state bird (or state game bird - depending on how you look at it) of Pennsylvania is the ruffed grouse. It has something to do with the popularity of hunting in the state, but no clear reason for choosing it was really defined. The runner-up was the song sparrow.

just thought of another.....London would have to be the Feral Pigeon B :)

and the Surrey Ring Necked Parakeet.....that's a blinder!

I nominate the mosquito as the National Bird of Cullowhee North Carolina, usa.
Other canditates include the gnat, the Turkey Vulture, and the American Crow. I believe the Crow would probably win, as the Native American word Cullowhee means Valley of the Crows, but has been misinterperated as Valley of the Lillies by the local yuppies.

For Sussex it's got to be Nightingale.

I'd have said Pom Skua for Sussex, more of a speciality here than Nightingale, though Pulborough has more confiding Nightingales than many places in Uk.

Pom Skua is something people from around England come to Splash Point annually specifically to see, probably one of the few such birds in Sussex. Fair enough Dunge would have a shout too but noone from Kent seems to have picked it yet, so... ;)

Black Grouse is the county bird for Durham - one of the best counties in the UK for numbers of this iconic upland species, and it also has some of the most accessible sites to watch them lekking. 40-50 males seen from the comfort of your car seat can't be bad!
Black Grouse has featured as the bird club logo for nearly 40 years.
