Black Mountain and Dalian Bay January 30, 2013

I spent 3 hours this morning in Big Black Mountain and then about 10 minutes quickly at Dalian Bay to have a look around before I had to be somewhere.

I started 7 full days of birding today with two visitors from Switzerland. Together we visited Jinshitan, Dalian, and Jinzhou Bays. The day started out at 2 degrees and very foggy and ended with clear skies and -11! They were keen on photographs of Saunders's Gull which worked out very well this afternoon. Yellow Sea Coast Feb. 2, 2013

The target bird of the day was Relict Gull. Paul Holt had found over 1000 of them wintering at one bay just south of Zhuanghe last winter. I quickly scrambled to join him that day last year after he texted me. Today it was confirmed that this large group of Relict Gulls in that area was not just a one year occurrence. We were overjoyed to spend most of the day with anywhere between 500-800 of them at the same location. I counted 374 at a roosting site at high tide but as the tide fell and the gulls moved to the mudflats, it became obvious that there must be more that one roosting site in the area as there were clearly more than 374 present. Just as with the Saunders's Gulls yesterday, we observed the Relict Gulls eating crabs. I'm not sure if this is the only thing they were feeding on but I have one photo showing a crab clearly about to be swallowed! Another fantastic day! No clouds in the sky. It was -10 when we left and warmed to around -5 at midday with a light wind.

Tomorrow we go to Wafangdian all day. Snow in the forecast....

Wafangdian and Jinshitan Mountains Feb. 3, 2013

Spent most of the day at Wafangdian. Returned as the snow became heavy around 1:30. It turned out to be very fortunate that we left when we did as the roads were becoming very poor as we arrived back in Jinshitan. With an hour or so of daylight left, we quickly had a short walk in the mountain area behind my house.

Jinshi Golf Club, Black Mountain, and Jinzhou Bay Feb. 4, 2013

We had a decent amount of snow last night so the roads to Laotieshan were not ready by 6:30 this morning. We changed plans and went to the three places written above in the title. We spent roughly 4.5 hours at the Jinshi Golf Club and then split the afternoon between the other two places. At Jinzhou Bay we focused on gull pictures. The temperature started around -8, warmed to perhaps -1 and ended at -8 again. Beautiful blue sky all day.

Dandong Great Wall Feb. 5, 2013

Today we left Jinshitan at 7:30 and drove the three or so hours up to Dandong. We birded a bit along the way and then spent the entire afternoon at Hu Shan (the Great Wall mountain). We did most of our birding from the Great Wall and, as well as birding, enjoyed great views into North Korea.

Tomorrow we plan to spend most of the day at Feng Huang Shan (about 30 minutes north of Dandong city) and then bird the Yalu River and coastal areas here before returning back to Dalian.

Feng Huang Shan (Phoenix Mountain) Dandong Feb. 6, 2013

Had a great day with surpisingly warm temperatures. There was too much snow/ice on the only road up so we had to walk it instead of riding most of the way up in a car. By doing this we encountered many more birds lower down on the mountain than normal. It was a very pleasant walk in fantastic winter scenery. We did well on the bird front, picking up almost all of the mountain's specialties.

Laotieshan Feb. 7, 2013

After arriving back in Jinshitan last night we attempted to head out at a decent time this morning to bird Laotieshan all day. We had a slight issue with an ATM eating a bank card and after a decent amount of time and 7 different workers in the bank working our case, we retrieved the card and were on our way... Despite this, we hit most of the Laotieshan areas today. The weather was a factor starting at -15 warming to around -10 and then cooling off again as darkness set in. There was also a 40 km/h wind on top. We were prepared for it and were dressed well. We left with a new appreciation of the phrase "Dalian wind". Laotieshan is located on the very southern tip of the Liaodong Penninsula and is the place where all the raptors and passerines migrate through during spring and fall migration times. In the winter there can be surprises there with some individuals of migratory species not willing to make the jump across the ocean to Shandong Province.

I would be more than happy with that fine list Tom. Congrats on the mammals and Euro-Nut too ! I was just saying to McMadd and Dev last week that I haven't seen a Nuthatch around Shanghai (or Hangzhou, Wu Yuan, Po Yang. Yang Shan etc.) since I've been birding here (just over a year) despite finding what looked to be very suitable habitat.

Feb. 11, 2013 Jinshitan

I took my wife and two children down to the beach today because the weather had warmed up to around zero. The kids played on the giant ice chunks piled up in a shallow bay. On the way home we decided to swing by the Little Owl place and see if it was out and we were rewared with good looks. After this we saw a lot of species very quickly so decided to take the long way home and do a bit of birding.

My housing complex in Jinshitan Feb. 16, 2013

I walked around my housing complex for an hour this morning. Temperature was right around zero but with a warm wind bringing in warmer air. I can whistle the Chinese Hill Warbler call so after hearing one in some scrub I had it out and dancing in front of me for a minute or so. See the picture to see how extensive their tails are. The wind was fanning it out nicely. The Naumann's Thrushes are also more tame right around my house and I was able to get a shot in habitat with the winter berries all around. Three variations of the Chinese Hill Warbler call also below.
