Kicking of the list as usual in the garden in Shropshire. This year's list will be a European one as I'm out of the UK for most of the year.

Bit of a slow start as waiting for hubby to get up at 10am :smoke: He was on nightshift last night, got home at 6.30am and is now having a couple of hours' kip before coming out with me....very frustrating for me as I just want to get outside!!! :smoke:
Luckily though my desk looks out over trees and overgrown gardens so I've been able to see a few of the commoner species :t:

Despite waking up to several inches of new snow, I had a great start to the new year. I saw quite a lot of birds at my feeder, and then after the roads were cleared I went out to several good local sites.

I ended up with 52 for the day (my goal was 40), including two state lifers, Horned Lark and American Pipit, that were probably blown in from farther north with the snow.

In the afternoon, got a Cardinal at home, and then took first birding trip of the year to a local cemetery. Got a lifer (haven't been birding long) in a Hooded Merganser.

Braved the -20'c temperature and did my annual new years day walk in the park,birds in order of appearance;

A feeble start, with a walk into town yesterday with my 5-year old girls the only time spent outside so far, but still, a list is a list:

Green-winged Teal is a cracking bird, about 20 years since the last one in Shropshire, county lifer! The Bullfinch was in the garden.
