Hi can anyone help identify this? It looks distinctive so I'm rather surprised I'm struggling so much.

Sorry for the misspelling of Ardeche: I can't seem to correct the title.

It looks like a Rufous Grasshopper Gomphocerippus rufus.

Surely the lack of pale tips to the antennae rule that out?

The dry oak woodland typical of the Ardeche and similar areas in southern France.

Yes you're quite right Steve, the missing tips of the antennae mean it's not G. rufus!

I think it's Calliptamus italicus (Italian locust).
