Hello, does anyone have up to the minute information for seeing Trocaz Pigeon and Rock Sparrow on Madeira. Based in Funchal. Thanks.

I had a brief visit last year in March. Didn't get Rock Sparrow, but did get Trocaz pigeon at sea level on the cliffs between Seixal and Ribiera de Janela. Apparently they can move away from the laurel forests during winter to feed at lower levels.

Not recent but I found Rock Sparrow on Ponta de Sao Lourenco & Trocaz Pigeon from the track to Faja de Nogueira below the Balcoes viewpoint.

Hello

We are in Madeira now and visited Palheiro Gardens yesterday. We arrived about 9am by taxi from Funchal and within minutes had scored with both Trocaz Pigeon and Maderian Firecrest. Maderian Chaffinch were also common.

Only 27 species in total so far though and I don't think I will make 30! Thanks for all help.

Rock Sparrow is really only reliable at the Ponta de S. Lourenço peninsula. There's a bus (113) going to Baía d'Abra (1h 15m from Funchal, see timetable attached), just next to Ponta de S. Lourenço.

Lagoa do Lugar de Baixo (Lugar de Baixo pool, near Ponta do Sol, to the West of Funchal), has delivered some rarities in the past (American waders and ducks, American Coot, Sora, etc) and from a quick look at ebird it seems there haven't been recent visits to it; it might be well worth a visit (several buses going from Funchal).

Enjoy your time there!
