Katmai Alaska USA August 2007 (1 Viewer)

Possibly a Mew Gull (American subspecies of Common Gull), but the pic isn't clear enough to be sure. Hard to tell if that's a red spot on the tip of the bill (in which case, not a Mew Gull), or a black spot with the bird not being fully mature.

It is a California Gull, Ian.
That is a red spot on the bill, and bill and head are far too heavy for a Mew Gull.

Surely not? Well out of range for that, by over 1500 km.

If not Mew, then another Glaucous-winged, with the photo quality having odd effects on the leg colour.

Not just leg colour but also bill pattern, mantle colour and even what can be seen of the (moulting) primaries look perfect for California Gull, even out of range.
Perhaps location is wrong? Ian has recently posted a photo of another California Gull (http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=294928) in very similar habitat, so maybe there has been some confusion?

i agree with peter, it definitely has the look of a california gull. shortish, greenish legs, red on bill, structure all wrong for mew gull. i'm just a bit irritated about the large white tip to a growing primary (or is it the tertial crescent?) - maybe a photo artefact? can't be the growing p10 with mirror in august..exif data say 21.12.2017 which obviously can't be true because it is moulting primaries. the pic from the other thread has the date 1.09.2007, weird, ah well, but that seems to stem from a different camera.

The reason for the date is that it was a scanned slide thjat was taken at the end of august 2007

The picture from the other thread was taken in early September at Great Bear Lodge near Port Hardy north of Vancouver where as the other is taken at Katmai near Kodiak Island Alasksa
