At a nearby open space, where I've painted, and walked our dogs for many years, I went looking for Meadowlarks. I had birded there the day before, and was certain I could find some between 2 ridges near my usual stroll. What I found on this morning was a Kestrel, whether for sport or a serious meal, that persistently flushed a flock of Meadowlarks off the ground, only to move them a thousand feet or so, where he eventually would make another low pass, driving them in a roughly circular pattern over the same ground. The Meadowlarks never sought any more cover, and would deploy themselves on the open ground (recently denuded by grazing cattle) like a radar system. Eventually the Kestrel found a meal of a large bug to satisfy himself, and the Meadowlarks had a respite in which to forage a bit themselves...
