European colour-ringed White Stork nesting in Morocco? (1 Viewer)

Hi,

Last year I saw a colour-ringed White Stork building a nest in Smir marshes, northern Morocco. Because in Morocco we had a small colour ringing program which used Orange ring and the locations are further south (I guess they have ringed either near Rabat or Middle Atlass or both), I straightforward thought about an Iberian bird (may be from southern Spain?). The bird was wearing a green plastic ring with black writings, but unfortunately I did not manage to read the letters.

It would be nice if someone knows about colour ringing in Spain or Portugal that use this colour. Also I wonder if someone has seen any colour-ringed White Stork in a nest here in Morocco.

Regards

Hi,

Thank you Marmot for the link. I searched through the web-site but I did not find the “green ring with black writing”. Is this combination exist? Or may be I did not see the proper colour of the writing (may be was white covered with mud?). Actually there are projects that used “green rings with white codes” in Germany, Belgium and Portugal. Any ideas?

Hi Mohammed,

There were two main schemes here in Andalucia for colour ringing young storks, both were organised by Manola Labon at Milvus Goes and then Ciguena Negra. I am sure you might find details by searching google on these birding groups. Let me know if you cannot find anything and will try for you here through contacts at Andalucia Bird Society.

Hi Mohamed,
I think the green plastic ring must be from Turkey. I don't know about writing colour, but green ring likely has white code.

Merhaba Orhan,

Welcome to Birdforum first. You right about the writing colour, it was a green ring with white code. A birder visited the area recently and photographed the bird building the nest again in the same place, but unfortunately the nest is no longer there, it was blown by the wind. I will try to get the permission to post the photo. The bird was born in southern Spain. Interesting!

Thanks

Hi,

It seems that this is not the first time that White Stork or other species breed in its wintering ground. I was reading an article about “Diffuse, short and slow migration among Blue Tits”, while reading I came across this phrases and I thought about this thread, so I posted it for wider sharing:

"...long distance migrants have also been recorded to occasionally breed at their tropical winter quarters, such as the Common Sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos and White Stork Ciconia ciconia (Moreau 1972). Also British and German Stonechats Saxicola torquata have been found to interrupt their migration and occasionally breed away from their original breeding grounds (Helm et al. 2006)".
