Phone and Nexus 7 infected (1 Viewer)

Both my phone and tablet have been infected after I used the hotel's WiFi. I had a demand for one hundred pounds as I was told I had been watching illegal porn and porn sites keep opening on both devices. I have Norton mobile security and Malwherebites plus CrapCleaner. None of these pick up my infection. Any advice would be appreciated. I can get on the internet either through 3G or WiFi but every so often up comes a porn site. Thanks. Roger

On an iOS device, I believe you should be able to reset to factory state and then download your apps again from the app store. I would guess something similar can be done with android?

yes, Settings>Backup & reset>Factory data reset,

will wipe the devices back to how they were when you bought them, if you want to go down that route.

You may lose your data off the devices, so make a back up of any photos, memorise usernames and passwords etc.

On the increase for mobile devices apparently.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will have to do this when I get home. Porn sites are opening every 5 minutes or so on the Nexus but phone is better. Obviously the demand for one hundred pounds to unblock the phone was a scam as I have not had that since. Worrying thing is that all my Apps that scan phone to protect me all report no malware or virus. I have clean phone and tablet, I think not. Roger

Have you tried AVG free?

It's worth considering whether you have downloaded any apps from anywhere other than Google's Play store as that could be a possible source - apps from the store should be safe. Edit: I don't think this is a likely cause after thinking about it - seems more likely they have either an unsecured network or somebody dubious working there who has access

Doing some reading for you and there looks to be good reason to be careful about what apps you get from the Play store too - prior research would be wise. You could also look up Kaspersky security and see what they have available for Android

Thanks. I had AVG on both devices and it reports both clean. I am certain the infection came from the hotel's WiFi as I got the first porn site opening up shortly after I logged on using the password. I already have Norton Mobile Security but I will look at Kaspersky. I will also look at the infection the ad on BF. Regards Roger

There was a report on telly or somewhere just the other day on just how easy it is for people's mobile devices at free wifi spots to be hacked into without the owner even realising, tutorials on how to do it on the internet etc ...

Scary.

Moved south to Travelodge at Accle on Friday and no porn popups. Moved to Redwings at Morcott on Saturday and again no problems. Home now and after an hour on internet I have had no porn popups. So my problem has to be with the Hunstanton hotel's WiFi. I spoke to them again before I left but they were not very interested. Thanks for all your replies. Roger
