Took this photo of Blue tits on my garden feeder.

It appeared daily for a week or two.

Does anybody have an opinion on the one with a yellow crown?

all 4 are juveniles readily told by yellowish cheeks and undeveloped blue crown. latter varies as we see, all 4 ind look different, but the rich orange-yellow crown isn't normal: pollen, some other staining?

I agree with Reader - pollen.

Shaun, are there any "red hot pokers" or similar flowers in the garden?

Plenty!

I have never seen any other birds so affected but I must agree it does look like pollen dust.

I agree, it does look like that. Would the whole of the crown be so covered in it for more than a week?

Shaun

If a bird becomes addicted to whatever is causing this it will visit regularly. On each subsequent trip more pollen will become attached taking the place of pollen that is disappearing.
