A Great Day Birding Camp Pendleton (1 Viewer)

Today I went birding around Camp Pendleton with a large group of birders (over 50!), part of a local Audubon group. We had an excellent time! Our first stop was at a sewage pond. Gadwalls, Cinnamon Teals, Black-necked Stilts, and even a pair of Least Bell's Vireos made appearances! Our second stop was at the Del Mar Jetty. There, several Least Terns and a pair of Snowy Plovers, some Brown Pelicans, numerous other shorebirds, a few Bottlenose Dolphins, and even a distant Gray Whale were present. The next stop was Lake O'neill. There I saw Yellow Warblers, Tree Swallows, a pair of Cackling Geese, Green Herons,a Blue Grosbeak, Western and Clark's Grebes, and Great-tailed Grackles. Finally, a few of us stopped at a Red-tailed Hawk nest thathad three chicks that were quite visible. I was also able to spot a Bullock's Oriole and a rodarunner there. So overall a very successful day with a variety of interesting birds seen!
