Sunday Bird Walks, Legacy Marsh, August 18, 2002, 8:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Weather: mostly sunny about 18º C, winds calm.

Observers: Sunday birders (17 of us, including visitors from New Mexico & Texas)

Number of Species: 36

Highlights: The Virginia Rails were calling. We had great looks at a flock of about eighteen Cedar Waxwings, perched in a Cedar tree, as they took turns hawking insects and flying back to the tree. The Great Blue Herons gave us good close looks as they flew from their perches. Someone remarked that you could definitely see that they had evolved from dinosaurs! A Willow Flycatcher was in the blackberry bushes not far off the road and we had good close-ups of a Cooper’s Hawk as he flew over us and landed in a Fir tree, posing for more looks in the scopes.
