Strange Falcon at Holland Haven Country Park (1 Viewer)

Hi All,

I was working yesterday by HHCP when I saw at a height what I thought was a Kestrel, it then closed it's wings up and stooped, so I thought perhaps Sparrowhawk, it was at this point that a Fiedfare came over the hedge like a missile followed by the Falcon and gave me good views, it was chocolate brown on the top and under wing had rusty red flanks, a slightly lighter brown chest with definate black spots, not barring. It had a black moustache with a light brown/creamy face and a dark head. I am stumped as to what this maybe, closest ID I can get in my guide books are either a Eleanor's Falcon or a Red footed falcon, or it may even be a hybrid falconers bird but there was no jesse's visible, it was slighty larger than a Kestrel and when flying had a rapid wingbeats followed by short glides, as I say long tail and slender pointed wings, exactly same body shape as a Kestrel but bigger.
Any help would be great

Regards

Rob

Hi Deborah,

Thanks for replying it has know been ID'd as a Lanner hybrid of some kind. Apparantly local birders have said it has been around the area for a while.

Regards

Rob
