Hello,

I have a special question. I found a general nature trip to Uganda in Jan.-Feb. 2010. How much it can cost in missed species of birds and mammals in comparison to the guided birding tour?

The route is Mburo, Mhaginga in Rwanda, Bwindi (Nkuringo group), Queen Elisabeth NP, Ruwenzori Mts, Kibale, Bugungu WR, Mabamba swamp, Entebbe.

Is Shoebill likely at Mabamba swamp?


PS. If somebody wants a non-problematic experienced birder to share the cost in Uganda this winter, let me know ;)
 
Mabamba's probably the most reliable site there is for Shoebill. For a general nature tour, it's going to depends how into the birds you are Jurek...I for one would find it excruciating to miss the LBJ's and smaller birds that just won't be of interest to the average participant, but for others it's not such a big deal. But for Uganda I'd try and find the extra and go with a specialist birding group - maybe cut out the middle man and contact a Ugandan company direct?

As already said, Shoebill is reliably seen at Mabamba. I would not go on a general tour, I think you will miss more than you see, especially as I would imagine they will spend relatively little time in the key forests. either swallow and pay the extra for a guided bird tour or travel independently, an easy option in Uganda.
