Surprise find at Cringleford by Cavell Court at junction of Roundhouse Way & Dragonfly Way was a Black Redstart 13th February 2017

What is presumably the same Ring-necked Parakeet that was seen in west Norwich last autumn is still around - it was present at the weekend viewed from the Marriott's Way, roughly level on the path with one of the old railway sculptures (if looking at a map roughly west of Wensum Valley Close, off Low Road).

I'd not seen any Starlings murmurating in the city centre this winter, but last night there was 2000+ over Lakenham about 17:45. They appeared to be heading towards the outer ring road, so perhaps roosting somewhere else.

I had my first singing Chiffchaffs of the year over the weekend - 2 at Whitlingham (plus a distant 3rd in the direction of Thorpe St Andrew) on Saturday and then one on Lakenham Way this morning.

A gaggle of Norwich birders were listening outside their houses, pubs, universities last night, producing a fair assembly of nocturnal migrants (invismig). I think the tally included Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, possible Gadwall, Moorhen, Water Rail, Ringed Plover, Curlew, Green Sandpiper, Redshank, Oystercatcher, Common Snipe, Song Thrush, Redwing, Blackbird.

Red Kite this morning flying over Trinity Strret towards city centre. Tawny Owl was calling from nearby at the same time, to offer another distraction to the senses!

Eaton Park, Norwich

Eaton Park, Norwich 20th August

Ten Swallows including at least one adult feeding two young by the boating lake, plus six Swift over.

The Ferriginous x Pochard hybrid reported today at Whitlingham could be the bird that was I saw at Salhouse Broad 2 or 3 years ago (maybe) that was also seen near on the river near Cockshoot Broad. Just thought I'd say.

Quick walk around Whitlingham CP today was very quiet- a few siskins, lots of tufted duck and a fresh dead juv kittiwake.

Following on from the past two posts, I'm now starting to put together the Whitlingham bird report for 2017 (including Trowse and Thorpe Marsh), so if anyone has any photos, sightings, ringing recoveries or breeding data that they would like included then please let me know. Examples of previous years reports can be found on my blog.

Thanks,
James

Fantastic report James...
The Parakeet article is of particular interest having seen 1-2 of the birds last year..
Hope you have a bird filled 2018

Thanks Sacha, I hope you have a great 2018 too.

Yes it will be interesting to see if they continue being seen through 2018 and if breeding is attempted, so if any local birders see Ring-necked Parakeets around Norwich perhaps they could post on this thread so we can keep track of them a bit.

Really interesting read, thank you, will look out for parakeets when I am in town (I am just north of Dereham, and have seen nothing of them here, but they left a good DNA sample on my car at a hotel in Broadstairs 18 months back!).
Shame abot the eagle following the traffic instead of visiting the reserve.
Very best regards
Harry

The cold spell has resulted in a large number of otherwise unsual sightings around the city. I'll try to collate them into a blog post soon, but for those not on social media:

Coues's Arctic Redpoll - still at Whitlingham C.P. with a mixed Lesser/Mealy flock, favouring the area of Alders along the edge of the Great Broad west from the visitors centre.
Smew, Pintail, Bittern, Goosander, Caspian Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, Dunlin, Redshank all seen at Whitlingham and/or Thorpe Marshes in the past few days
A drake Mandarin on the river near Thorpe River Green
1st-winter Glaucous Gull still around, mostly being seen in west Norwich but doesn't seem to have a regular routine. Earlham/Bowthorpe Marshes and the area near the WAterworks have both had multiple sights.
Redshank and Snipe seen along the river Wensum near Andersons Meadow

Also lots of Fieldfares - I had my first one for my current garden yesterday, and the possibility of Woodcock turning up in random places, although hopefully now we are past the worst of it they will head back into more normal habitat to feed up.

Happy birding, James.
