White-winged Black Tern (Aus) (1 Viewer)

G'day

I was wondering if anyone could explain the leg colouring in a couple of WWBTs I photographed on the w/e.

In the first pic, a WWBT is landing near a couple of its fellows and a couple of Wiskered terns. Can anyone explain its red toes, grey legs?

In the second pic, the WWBT on the right has red legs. Its darker uniformly worn plumage might indicate that it is a first year bird. Can anyone explain its red legs?

Regards, Laurie.
