Hi everybody,

Could you please help me with the identification of this bird?

The picture was taken in October in Peru.

maybe rusty-bellied brush finch with aberrant head plumage???

The first bird that came to mind for me was also Rusty-bellied Brush Finch.

Motmot and all,

It was in the area of San Pedro de Casta, in the western slopes of Andes driving up from Lima.

GPS coordiantes:

11° 44' 56.16" S - 76° 35' 35.36" W

Altitude: 3042 metres

The bird was standing on a stone fence.

Farmfields, scatteres trees, ...

If you want to have a look to the area in Google Earth, the coordinates are very acurrate (they are from the GPS of my camera).

The bird has a conspicuous orange color around the vent.

well,
checking birds of peru, region and altitude are both good for rusty-bellied brush finch...
and a quick google shows that it's a common bird in the santa eulalia valley AND that scattered white head feathers are a regular occurence.
