COAL TIT
as anybody played host to being a good samaratan for the day in
performing a direct role in helping a wildbird out doors i do a role
which happened when i was on holiday in brixham devon 1978 it first
involved being in the right place at the right time which is usually
nearly all part of being a birdwatcher anyway on this occasion i was
on brixham harbour just on the entrance point for shipping into and
out of the harbour where two dutch lads were rod fishing almost
straight away of me being at that point one of the lads said something
loud below and when i looked down i saw a seabird with its wing tangled
in the line on closer inspection i saw it was a fulmar the lad whose rod
and line the fulmar was caught in asked me if i would offer assistance
without a further do i got him to gently swing the bird over to me my
concerns were for the bird but also for myself regarding the birds beak
as soon as i had the bird in both hands my left hand held the neck just
below the head firm but not as to hurt the bird at the same time
admireing the beauty of this bird and how privileged i was to be able
to handle such a fine bird while i untangled the birds wing with my right
hand haveing done so i released the bird immediately from where the
fulmar left at speed to all our delights especially mine.
