Tuesday March 08, 2005:
The herring spawn has subsided around Parksville, but there are large amounts of roe washing up on the beaches now and this continues to attract thousands of gulls. Over 1000 Brant Geese are in the area. Thousands upon thousands of seabirds in huge rafts are near Admiral Tryon Blvd at French Creek, and the Surfside RV \ Hovercraft Base areas in Parksville.
A EURASIAN WIDGEON was seen in with AMERICAN WIDGEONS at Columbia Beach in French Creek, along with a number of GREATER YELLOWLEGS, SANDERLINGS, BLACK TURNSTONES and BLACK-BELLED PLOVERS.
The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD sightings are becoming more frequent and further inland in the Nanaimo area--one was seen along Labieux Road in Nanaimo.
Monday March 07:
Eight WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, a BLUE GROUSE and a TURKEY VULTURE were seen at the top of Little Mountain in Parksville.
The TURKEY VULTURES are back. There have been sightings over the meadows near the Esso Gas Station at Nanoose Bay, over Northwest Bay Road near the Wall Beach Road Farm, over the intersection of Highways 4 and 19 near Qualicum Beach, over Meridian Way in Parksville and over Cottle Lake in the Linley Valley in Nanaimo.
A TREE SWALLOW was spotted along Akenhead Road in Cedar.
A YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was sighted at Neck Point Park in Nanaimo.
Over 500 BONAPARTE'S GULLS and a large flock of diving ducks were seen offshore from the viewing tower at Qualicum Beach.
Sunday March 06:
An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen perched on a hydro line in the 1900 block of Northwest Bay Road.
A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD is coming to feeders along Cameo Drive on Gabriolia Island and another one was spotted on Mudge Island.
