Gull in northern Chile (1 Viewer)

Saw this gull in Antofagasta in northern Chile. It has quite distinctive features but I still can't work out what it is. The bill looks like a ring-billed gull but they have white heads. Any ideas?

I looked at our pictures in BF, and that plumage of Band-tailed/Belcher's Gull is not well represented. Please upload to the Gallery!

Sure will do. How long do they keep this non-breeding plumage for then? According to the guides the one in the photo is probably "2nd winter".

I now have the Chile field guide in front of me, and I think your bird was in full adult winter plumage. A younger bird should have some barring on the underside and some brownish in the upperside that would separate it from this look -- If I am correct this time ;)
