142. Stonechat

Looks like we will struggle to get to the bench-mark of 150 species in 2014; remaining possibilities (with varying degrees of likelihood) include Woodcock, Grey Plover, Waxwing, Brambling, Goshawk, Little Owl, Short-eared Owl, Water Pipit, Rock Pipit and Knot.

Today's sightings:

Moors Pool - 2 Little Egrets, Pintail, 8 Wigeon. 2 Yellow Wagtail and 5 Meadow Pipit heading south (Dave J). Jack Snipe this evening (Craig R)

Flashes - Tawny Owl, Green Sandpiper. 4 Swallows and 51 Meadow Pipit heading south (Dave J)

Total of 74 Shoveler across the reserve (Dave J)

Moors Pool, 1 Jack Snipe viewable on far shore from west hide just to the right of the right hand (shingle) island. 9 Wigeon, 22 Greylag, 5 Snipe. No sign of Pintail this evening.
Flashes- Very quiet, 1 Green Sand. Gulls struggled only just into 4 figures. A small number of Snipe and 21 Curlew

stonechat male 3rd Flash fox fence line. yellowhammer male west hedge. green sand 130 teal. 66 shoveler. small number of mipits and skylark over. snipe 9.

Dave J at Moors. rock pipit and yellowhammer over plus several mipits skylark and swallow. little egret 8 Wigeon.

curlew 20, lapwing 80, snipe 9, green sand 1,
BHG 1100, c80 large gulls flying over , Buzzard 2,
rook 40 north fields, jay 2,raven 2
cettis singing, chiffchaff 6 (incl 1 singing), blackcap, reed warbler,
grey wag 3,
song thrush 3, stonechat male, chaffinch, linnet 8, goldcrest 2, reed bunting c10.
VIS MIG
meadow pipit 20, skylark 4, yellowhammer

MOORS
GCG 5, little grebe 12, cormorant 5, BITTERN , LITTLE EGRET 3,
shoveler 35 ( some of these had come from the Flashes - Dave J said there were not this many earlier in the day). teal 15, wigeon 8, pochard 1 fem, tufted 18, coot 120ish, water rail a lot of calling birds from reed beds,
snipe 7, lapwing 25, large gulls c60, BHG 400, Buzzard 8 ,
kingfisher 2, green woodp, swallow, house martin, meadow pipit on scrape, cettis 2 singing, chiffchaff 2,
otter along east - NE side of Moors pool.

Chris's pic shows how long an otter really is, after you see one, a mink would never be mistaken for one:t:
