On what was a very cold day, the open water actually increased as a result of the increasingly strong NE wind. As the day progressed the 'east bank' warmed up and attracted more feeding snipe, increasing to 20 by 3pm some literally below the east hide. Some of the duck numbers also increased, while above a steady northerly movement of large gulls ensued. Behind the east hide a small but diverse flock of passerines fed in the lee of the wind, this included song thrush, redwing, starling, goldfinch, chaffinch, bullfinch and tits , with a few snipe close by. Reed buntings were singing in several areas and cettis warblers were unusually conspicuous in front of the east and west hides. More water rails were seen in swampy bottom the NM causeway and the secret garden, as well as the usual areas.

species counts MOORS:

This is probably a wide goose chase but did anyone find or hand in a rubber eyepiece for a telescope on the day the bittern was found dead on north moors. Probably lost in the hide closest to the sand martin wall, but could of been in the one opposite .

Other than there were two Grey Herons, not much to add to the WEBS count. Late on a Nuthatch was seen to the right of the was hide in the field maple along the fence-line and Cetti's Warblers showed to right and left of the hide.

Dave J had 13 Pochard, 2 Lesser Redpoll, Skylark and Meadow Pipit this morning.

Jason T had a drake Goosander over the Flashes heading north early afternoon (#86 for the year)

Also peregrine, kestrel, green woodp,
mistle thrush singing behind east hide, small numbers of fieldfare roosted.
Feeding station and scrubland between two hides - reed bunting 15, chaffinch 3, greenfinch 12+, song thrush,

water rail also seen in new NE channel on North Moors, 2 in Amy's marsh scrape, the causeway also had more birds calling. Upton must be one of the best places to see this species.
The Cetti's to the left of the east hide was spending time in the eastern border scrub, a place I have never seen them in before.

If it has been found im sure it will be where the leaflets are kept

Will have to check the records but I doubt we have had a higher Shelduck count from this time of year. We may need to build multiple boxes on both sides of the reserve at this rate!

Just been through the annual reports; since 1984 the best February Shelduck count had been six birds (in 1992 and 2006). Nine were present in mid January 2005; this was a prelude to breeding later in the year.

Had 3 people say they've seen 4 Little Egrets today.
