Red-bellied woodpecker I believe (1 Viewer)

Yes, Red-bellied Woodpecker. The red on the belly is a mere wash and can be difficult to see in the field.

"Red-bellied" is a bit of a misnomer - originally named after taxidermied / skins of the bird in which the field mark is more apparent, a rosy hue is apparent in about 20% of birds' bellies, but they settled on that name because "Red-headed Woodpecker" was already taken. At least that's the birder lore!

Yes, a relic of the bad old days of shotgun ornithology. Ring-necked Duck’s another, and long may they both wave in their quirkiness. . ..
