I've just been looking at an old paper article from the Northern Echo in the north-east of England by Brian Unwin entitled Shame on twitchers who keep secrets. It's from a long time ago, possibly 15-20 years, it read ;News has just broken that a rare gyr falcon from the Arctic was ranging over County Durham's moorland from late December to late January. It has taken so long to become public knowledge because the five people who saw this spectacular white hunter chose to keep it to themselves, although it was possible to see it from a public road. A lot of birdwatchers in the region would have loved to have seen this falcon. Two of those who kept the information quiet are regularly in twitching crowds when a rarity appears, usually as a result of being tipped off by other enthusiasts. They ought not to be suprised if their phones don't ring so often in the future; Does anybody know the story behind this article?
