EZ What gull? (1 Viewer)

Hi All,

I know this will be easy for most but I have very little idea what gulls I have here because of the juvenile plumage.

Taken in Lyme Regis in August this year.

My guess is that the larger is a Herring gull and the smaller a lesser black back?

Both are Herring Gulls I believe the lower bird 1st summer going towards 2nd winter. The upper bird is a year older.

If yuo look closely you can see the pale gray mantle feathers of the left had bird appearing.

Thanks Jane (told ya it'd be EZ!)

What confuses me a little is the black tip to the Left hand birds bill, is it muck or is that the way young herring gulls are?

A proper ID guide is on my xmas list BTW :)

That is pretty much how they are. I'd expect a LBBG of the same age to have a more or less all black bill.

This is where someone points out that its actually a Yellow-legg, but I don't think so.
