Saw these pintail on the reserve at martin mere lancs, any idea why there red?

Welcome aboard!
Looks like mud.They may be foraging in a muddy fileld or the like.It could also that these birds swam through some poored paint or the like.

Thanks to martin of the WWT who replyed with "the orangey-red staining is from iron rich waters. We have had an influx of Pintail with such staining this week".

Oh, belly stains! Perhaps something to add in my future duck paintings!

At first when I read this I thought you were insinuating the duck on the bottom was a Pintail.

The staining on these birds seems amplified by the warm lighting.
