Help a poor simple-minded beginner! I was surprised to see this on the camera when I downloaded the pictures. What is it? LBB?

I think most people (including myself) would find this very hard - a first winter large gull from underneath. I'd favour Herring Gull though.

Hard to say for sure,but it looks like Herring to me,especially since the left wing appears to show the paler inner primaries so characteristic of 1st and 2nd-w Herrings.

I'm inclined to go with Harry. The pale "windows" formed by the inner primaries/outer secondaries are a feature of Herring Gull (at least in our argenteus race - not necessarily in others). 1w LBB shows little or no window. The deep chest says HG to me too. However, I'd prefer to see the bird live!
